Pressure Washing vs Soft Washing: What's the Difference?
Pressure washing and soft washing solve different problems with different methods. Here's which surface needs which — and why the wrong choice damages your property.
These two terms get used interchangeably, but they're completely different methods — and using the wrong one on a surface can cause real damage. Here's the difference and when each is the right choice.
Pressure washing: high pressure for hard surfaces
Pressure washing uses high-pressure water — typically 2,500–4,000 PSI — to physically blast dirt, grime, and stains off durable, hard surfaces. It's the right method for concrete driveways, brick, pavers, and stone. The pressure does the work.
Soft washing: low pressure with chemistry for delicate surfaces
Soft washing uses very low pressure — about the strength of a garden hose — combined with specialized cleaning solutions that kill algae, mold, and mildew at the source. It's the safe method for vinyl siding, stucco, brick walls, painted surfaces, and especially roofs. The chemistry does the work, not the pressure.
Why the wrong method causes damage
- High pressure on siding forces water behind the walls, causing rot and mold
- High pressure on stucco can crack and chip the surface
- High pressure on a roof strips the protective granules off asphalt shingles
- Low pressure on heavily stained concrete simply won't clean it
How we choose
On every property, we match the method to each surface. Your driveway gets pressure washed; your siding and roof get soft washed. That's why a professional assessment matters — the wrong choice is expensive.
